The Different Types of Data Safety

There are a myriad of types of data security, however the most important ones include:

Authentication is the process of confirming that the individuals who have access to your data are really who they claim to be. This includes passwords, multifactor identification and other methods for confirming identity.

Encryption — The process of converting information to an unreadable format so only those with the appropriate keys are able to view it. This secures sensitive data in transit and at rest such as databases, files and emails.

Monitoring – The act of preventing malicious actors from accessing or transferring data from your network by blocking or intercepting them at the gateway. This may include data-loss prevention (DLP) and encryption and training employees on the best practices.

Backups — The ability of quickly and safely restoring data in the event that a system failure or cyberattack, disaster, or data breach happens. This can be accomplished by creating copies of the data in a different format, or by storing it in the cloud.

Data minimization is the process of only storing information that is essential to your business. This reduces your vulnerability by cutting down on the number of potential hackers’ targets. It also saves you money on storage and helps prevent bloat that could cause compliance issues.
